Horse Physical Examinations

Routine physical examinations are the perfect time to make sure that your horse is doing well and that all questions concerning health, diet, hoof care, and reproduction are answered. During these examinations, Dr. Ridlen will examine all body systems of your horse, including the respiratory, skeletal, and muscular systems, as well as the eyes, mouth, and skin. He will make sure that the horse does not have external parasites, skin problems, hoof problems, and that the animal's heart and lungs sound healthy and clear. He will estimate weight, height, and age, and make sure that your horse is not overweight and at risk for metabolic diseases. He will discuss breeding and check mares for pregnancy. He can take radiographs and do abdominal ultra-sonography using portable equipment that he brings with him. Healthy horses can be given their annual vaccines during the annual physical examination. Additionally, blood can be drawn for elective or required blood tests.
