Broodmare Care

The basis of a successful breeding program is a healthy, fit broodmare. Proper care of your broodmare helps to ensure a sound, fertile animal that produces vigorous foals. Veterinary care is necessary to keep your broodmare at her best and Dr. Ridlen is here to help.

Dr. Ridlen is available to help in all aspects of broodmare care. He can help identify pregnancy in your mare and offer advice on breeding, prenatal care, and nutrition. He suggests specific vaccinations approximately six weeks prior to foaling to ensure proper antibodies in the colostrums. He can ultrasound the mare's abdomen to identify the stage of pregnancy. He will perform pregnancy checks throughout the pregnancy to ensure the health of the mare and the foal. He is available to help in the delivery of the foal and to make sure that the mare is in fine shape after foaling. If necessary, Dr. Ridlen can administer injectable medications to help with the foaling and ease the mare's pain. Additionally, Dr. Ridlen can help identify problems in mares with reproductive problems utilizing history, physical examination, blood tests, uterine cultures, and uterine biopsies. He can also palpate mares to determine readiness for breeding. He is available to help in all stages of mare breeding and delivery of a healthy foal.
